Chevron Faces Legal Action Over Ecuador Pollution Claims

Posted By Pavich Law Group P.C. || 18-Oct-2012

Earlier this week, a court in Ecuador issued yet another order against the U.S. oil giant Chevron in relation to allegations that Chevron contaminated a large area of the Amazon from 1964 to 1992. The court order allows plaintiffs in the case to seize approximately $200 million worth of Chevron's assets in partial satisfaction of an $18.2 billion judgment awarded against Chevron in July of this year.

Plaintiffs in this case were from villages alleged to have been contaminated by various oil extraction activities. They accuse the oil company Texaco, which Chevron acquired in 2001, of dumping toxic drilling waste into unlined pits. Chevron, in turn, denies these allegations and claims that Texaco cleaned up all of the waste it created. This long running legal battle has gone on for nearly two decades, with related actions filed in Ecuador, the United States and Canada. Additionally, Chevron challenged the judgment before an international arbitration panel. This panel will begin hearing the dispute in November.

While the allegations in this action are certainly shocking, it seems that every day new allegations of corporate wrongdoing arise. Corporations have been implicated in the recent financial crisis, environmental degradation and even serious human rights abuses. All too often, the victims of corporate wrongs feel helpless, especially when the corporation is a behemoth such as Chevron. However, it is important to know that the victims of corporate abuse may be entitled to compensation. This is why it is important to speak with an experienced victims' rights attorney today.
